Michael Jackson’s death has been something of a godsend for Michael Jackson’s brothers.
Before Michael died, the brothers filmed a one-hour pilot for A&E that was supposed to include some kind of reunion of them with Michael. But Michael never agreed to it, didn’t do it, and died before it could be discussed again.
But sources tell me that A&E has approved going forward with a series of further episodes that will show the Jackson brothers grappling with Michael’s death and their own lives. And that should be interesting since it’s unlikely any of them had seen Michael for much more than a few minutes at their parents’ bogus 60th wedding anniversary party this year.
An A&E spokesman declined comment; sources close to the network say the deal for a series isn’t done yet. But the original A&E deal was a pilot with provisions for a series, so it’s going to happen. It hasn’t been decided whether the footage that exists will be shaped into a number of half hour or hour long sessions. It certainly has all the promise of “Being Bobby Brown,” that’s for sure.
Meantime, the pilot—which may include at least a reference at its end that Michael has died–will be aired on A&E within the month, sources say. The deal, by the way, was put together by Danny O’Donovan, who has faithfully managed the group since they left Motown in the late 70s.
By the way, you can read an earlier, excellent piece about Jodi Gomes, producer of the pilot, by THR’s James Hibberd here.
Meantime, don’t dismiss the idea that NBC won’t try and do something with the Jacksons. Even though insiders say there are no plans right now, my sources say the network is “desperate” to find a few blockbuster lead-ins to Jay Leno this fall. A Jackson special might just do the trick.

I for one will not be watching this,it just won’t be the same to me without Michael!!

I was looking forward to this show before Michael died. I am glad that they are going ahead with it.
According to his siblings they did see Michael. When you become adults you don’t see each other everyday because you have your own lives and families. So I think whoever said that is just creating another tabloid rumor for headlines.

[...] Jacksons on TV: The previously discussed Jackson Brothers reality show is now a go at A&E, according to Roger Friedman. The pilot for the show had been shot before Michael’s death, and now the network will produce further episodes showing the brother’s dealing with their loss. Also, Joe Jackson will probably do something crazy. [HR] [...]

Keep up the good work Mr. Friedman. As I’ve followed this story, I’ve noticed how many blogs and so-called journalists take your actual REPORTING and print it as their own. Thank you for still doing old-fashioned reporting and trying to shine a light in the darkness of pr flackery and unsourced gossip.

A reality show on the Jackson Brothers (or any of the family) is not necessary. They are already on the air enough, especially $$$ chasing Jermaine.

It may make people who feel inadequate about them selves to speak ill of other poople, demean, belittle, disparage, libel, slander, repeat lies about, and discredit celebrities, yet celebrities are real people. They have feelings, and when they are mistaken enough to read things published about them like ‘the death of their brother is a godsend,’ it us upsetting and hurtful, and rubs salt in the wounds of pain they are already feeling. Having managed my friend, Michael Jackson’s guitarist David Williams, who also passed on this year, I have met Tito, Jermaine, and Joe Jackson, and I can tell you, none of them were poor, and none of them would do just any thing for money. Nor was it a godsend for them that their brother and son is dead. They were all, and still are, very upset and heartbroken. Life can not stop when a loved one passes, and The Jackson’s have every right to make money from the memory of Michael, which will help preserve his legacy, their son and brother. Better them than a hundred venture capitalists peddling counterfeit t- shirts and the like of Michael on streets around the world. I expect better reporting from an entertainment trade that used to be about truth and quality. I hope THR and its affiliates will use better judgement in the future.

No matter what happens with a tacky reality show, MJ had a big family, a family that lined up to use the shower, that had to share everything, it is only just and fair that his family decides who will attend his funeral and where it will take place, ‘we will all arrive where we started and know the place for the first time’ Thank you TS Eliot.

Perhaps your reporting should have been a bit more focused, if not thorough regarding Michael Jackson touring or recording with his brothers. The public record is very clear, including but not limited to Michael Jackson’s graceful, yet unequivocal published statement in response to his brother’s assertion that they would be in studio and touring together; he wished them well, but had no plans to record or tour with them. Rolling Stone Magazine’s online Rock and Roll Daily has done good reporting on this story, not dependent on unsubstantiated inuendo nor interviews with dubiously informed/misrepresenting self-serving individuals, exploring the public record, including legal documents and published communications. A lack of journalistic responsibility and integrity in no small way contributed to Michael Jackson’s suffering and ultimately his death, for this and oh so many more reasons his legacy deserves at the very least, journalistic diligence if not responsibility and integrity.

AND WHY NOT! THERE ARE ALOT OF STUPID REALITY SHOWS OUT THERE.
AT LEAST THIS ONE WOULD BE OF A FAMILY THAT HAS BEEN WITH US FOR MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS! MAYBE IT WOULD SHOW US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT MICHAEL WAS ABOUT AND TELL US WHAT HAPPEND BEHIND THE LEGACY AND THE MUSIC.

I am so sick of people insinuating that the Jackson Family is trying to profit from Michaels death…this has been the famous “family” for over 40 years…Thye are the most well known family in the world, and have established their fame together long before Michael became famous on his own. Yes, Michael rose above them to the top, but they are famous in their own right…They loved Michael, they were there at his trials in LA, they have helped him on the Neverland Ranch…Michael is the one who isolated himself, it wasnt because they were “jealous” of him or because he wouldnt share his money with them…give me a break people….they are a grieving family just like any family would, only their pain is thrust into the spotlight…All eyes are on them now, and people are finding comfort in knowing that the family legacy will go on still..

I have read many, many articles that have attempted to discredit or minimize the myriad of talents that this family has. It’s a gift, it can’t be taught. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Randy are very talented musicians and should be celebrated for their individual gifts. Certainly Michaels demise will enable us to focus primarily on his brothers during thid show, albeit very difficult. His talent prevailed, having been thrust on the fore-front since adolescense. He will be terribly missed, but his brothers still have lives to fullfill.

Yes, that “godsend” was EXTREMELY callous and cold…..and UNFOUNDED. Who ARE you anyway to go around making judgements like that?!!! SHAME on you!
October 26th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Why is it that people have to talk so bad about the Jacksons. I love the family and yes like every family there are situations that happen that we don’t like, but when you love each other you get mad, forget and move on.
I know that even though they did not see each other like they may have wanted to, I am sure that each one knew that the other loved them. I hope and pray that they keep Michael’s memory alive for themselves, his children and his fans.
May God bless the Jackson family.
The King of Pop has gone home to the King of Kings. Let us remember that he was someone’s son, brother, father and he was loved by the fans who could see his pain.
Peace and Blessings

People don’t just stop living because a family member has died. The way the economy is, it’s a struggle for everybody in this world. Micheal just happen to be the most talented one in the group. This would be a great opportunity for the young generation to watch what this group went through We all have to survive in this world.

I think its time for them to do something. I would like to see them find their own identity. The O’Jays and Isley Brothers are still performing and doing well; why can’t the Jacksons’? Oh, where is Randy ?

I find it very interesting that no one even mentions that Randy is missing. Isn’t he also a member of the Jackson family? He also recorded and toured with the group. By the way, he also had a solo career. I find it remarkable that Randy doesn’t even get a footnote. I believe that he deserves to at least be acknowledged.

I am glad that the brothers are re-uniting and happy to see them healthy and productive ppl. I don’t see why ppl have a need to hate on them. They are legends. Think of all the hits they had — ABC, Dancing Machine, I Want You Back, Never Can Say Goodbye, Can You Feel It, the list goes on. I loved all of them–especially FINE Jackie and cool, low-key Tito. (Tito quietly is one of the best guitarists pop has ever seen but never got his due! Check out his solo on This Place Hotel. Awesome) I think due to their musical dedication, familial bonds and unity, they are owed a bit more respect.
Sincerely,
A Real J5 Fan

To the person that wished Jermaine dead, you should be ashamed of yourself. Please remember that there was a group called the Jackson 5 of which these four brothers plus Michael were a part of. This is what catapulted them to fame; they are all talented. However, Michael was blessed with more. The brothers are not capitalizing on his death, and these brothers are not broke by any means. They are about family. The point that they always drive home in interviews is that at the end of the day the Jacksons are a family. If you are such a fan of Michael Jackson, why would you call his family ugly? They come from the same mother and father. If you are such a fan of Michael Jackson, why would you wish someone in his family dead? Shame on you. A lot of so called fans fail to remember that Michael and his brothers (Jackson 5) were famous for many, many years before Michael went solo. The Jackson 5 have the albums and awards to prove it. If you love Michael so much, I don’t think he would be too pleased to know that you said such ugly things about his family. As someone mentioned earlier, they have lost of loved one but they have to go on, and this series was taped well before Michael’s death. Please let’s learn to have compassion for others.

I personally like the show because it is not often that we get to see a talented, African-American family! It let’s me know they are human and like every other family. We have our differences, but we are still family. However; it is very disturbing that none of them have black wives or girlfriends. It is sad and they don’t even realize it is just a form of self-hatred.
Jackie is compassionate, loving and a wonderful person. I love Marlon’s humor, stability and how family-oriented he is. Tito possesses a lot of the father’s characteristics, which is not bad at all. He is firm, yet, loving and caring which is a great combination.
Jermaine, on the other hand is very vain, shallow, selfish and lacks self-confidence. He needs a woman to validate him and that is so feminine. He acts like a 12 year old and needs counseling! I get tired of looking at Halima on the show and everywhere he goes! He would not have a black woman on the show like that. It really just shows his true character. He couldn’t handle being alone and has his balls caught up in her purse!!! She is not pretty to look at and neither was Tito’s girlfriend. All in all, they love their children and are there for them, love and respect their parents which are very admirable qualities.
It is sad that such a beautiful, talented, black family are so enamored with other skin colors.
I have to give credit to Joe and Katherine. I loved Michael; he was a musical genius and gave us talent beyond our imagination. It is so sad that he couldn’t ever live a normal life or ever be true to who he really was. It would have been nice if he had fathered children of his own race, but his children are beautiful and I recognize every race is a precious gift from the Heavenly Father.
You don’t see a lot of white men marrying black women. Our men are going to have to wake up and get it together!!!

The Jackson Family is a big joke. the four brothers trying to come up with something after all of these years is truly sad.Michael was one of a kind. eventho he changed the way he looked. that in itself was unique. the other brothers are old and ugly and I just can’t imagine what MJ would have looked like had he not changed. the length of time it has taken them to come up with just one record, MJ would have producted alblums, videos, and anything he wanted. they are in their 50’s singing ABC’s. they need to get some 9 to 5 gigs.

Most certainly realize what you may suggested. Your favorite basis had been unquestionably the perfect to grasp. I explain to you, I always get irked any time individuals explore worries that they obviously have no idea of about. You were able to hit the nail on the head and even explained out every little thing while not complication. , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
