Lee Daniels‘ “Precious” got a rare standing ovation last night at the New York Film Festival. This is the powerful indie film starring Mariah Carey, who does a wonderful job as a Harlem social worker. She is so inside the character of Mrs.Weiss, with a Long Island accent and no makeup, some fans may have to be convinced it’s the pop singer.
But “Precious” is notable for the performances of Gabby Sidibe, who plays Precious, and Mo’Nique, who steals the film as Precious’s abusive mother, Mary.
As usual Mo’Nique was not in attendance. This time the excuse given was that it was the birthday of her toddler twins. Whatever. Mo’Nique had better get with the program. Everyone else from this movie showed up last night, including Mariah, Lenny Kravitz, and Sherri Shepherd. Even Robert DeNiro has been supporting wife Grace Hightower, who has one memorable scene in the film. He’s gone to all the premieres.
In the audience, besides DeNiro: Jane Fonda and heavyweight record producer beau Richard Perry, Steve Buscemi and wife Jo, Queen Latifah, Harvey Keitel, Gayle King, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and Chic producer Nile Rodgers (”We Are Family.”)
At the jam-packed party at the Oak Room in the Plaza Hotel, Mary J. Blige appeared with one of the most obnoxious bodyguards ever. He made a big deal of protecting her from…no one. No one cared that she was there. And we thought she was all about “No More Drama.” Ironically, it wasn’t even Mary J. that people wanted to see, but Gabby Sidibe, the star of the movie.
Mariah Carey made a five-minute pit stop at the party, then took off.
“Precious” is clearly the indie sleeper of the year. When it finally arrives in November, expect big audiences. And Oscar nominations in January for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Actress (Gabby Sidibe), and one or more Supporting Actresses (Mariah, Mo’Nique). Lee Daniels has really crafted an emotional rollercoaster in “Precious,” one that never fails to be totally involving. “Precious” is unsparing but it’s also absent of cliche. How refreshing. It’s completely original. No one will want to miss it.

I was there last night and was just blown away by the acting of Gabby Sidibe, Mariah and Mo’nique AND Sherry Sheppard and Paula Patton. Mo’nique’s performance is definetly Oscar worthy and so is Mariah’s.

How much do you get to be on Mariah Careys payroll? This is not her movie. You mention her incessantly and in glowing terms while disparaging other pop stars. and sorry – a pop star is what she is no matter how much you make her to be a legend…

I’m seeing the movie at the Chgo Film Fest in 2 weeks; got my tickets. And yes Roger is promo’ing Mariah because Monique don’t care about sh***….Roger, I keep thinking, maybe Monique is po’d that she’s on BET with a Talk show and not on FOX (major network) like Wendy Williams? you think.
But Roger is right. If Monique don’t start showing up and promo’ing the movie, not only will she not get an Oscar nod, but she won’t be hired again by Oprah and Tyler.

I was at the Film Fest last nite — yes, the film was excellent, and yes, Mariah is rock solid. Mo’Nique sure does steal the movie; it’s a shame she hasn’t done any publicity for it. She should be basking in the glow of her achievement and courting the Oscar buzz — it’s a big mistake to do otherwise.

Although Mariah does one of her best acting jobs to date, I as well find it “slightly” disturbing that she is mentioned as much, not just in this article, but many..But it will get a lot more publicity because of it..
As for Monique’s absence, whatever her reasons are her own, her performance in this film is acting 101, and its unfortunate that her needing to “be seen” would hurt her chances at an Oscar nod..but alas its true..Oh and by the way, Oprah and Tyler had “nothing” to do with the “producton of this film, they only hopped on after seeing it at Sundance, well after Lee Daniels and executive producer Lisa Cortes (and others) did an outstanding job from start to finish!!!

Roger, did you see the New York Daily News story about this film premiere? It says Mariah Carey was booed at the premiere for being late, but I’ve been told that’s an outright lie. You should totally call them out.
